Paestum is undoubtedly one of the most important archaeological sites in Europe: thank you to the perfect state of conservation of the three main temples, in fact, the area is home to a real open-air museum, where architecture and history meet to tell a past plenary and glorious.
Considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, the area of the Archaeological Park of Paestum, one of the main cities of ancient Magna Graecia, is a real jewel in which the temple of Hera, also known as “the basilica”, stands out. of Athena and Neptune, masterpieces of Ionian architecture: just think that in the eighteenth century the three temples were considered the “oldest buildings outside Egypt”.
You can also choose a 2-hour stop at an archaeological site of your choice between Pompeii and Herculaneum.
In Pompeii, there are famous excavations, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where you can admire the remains of the city buried under the ashes when Vesuvius erupted violently in 79 AD. Here, you will be enchanted by the extraordinarily preserved remains that suggest the daily life of the time and that the eruption of Vesuvius has “immobilized” over time. A unique place in the world, unmissable!
If you choose Herculaneum, however, you will visit another very important site, where the remains are equally well preserved and where you can breathe history at every corner. It is a Roman city that was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD Like nearby Pompeii, the city was perfectly preserved by a one-meter thick layer of volcanic ash which, in the case of Herculaneum, was then covered by a lava flow that turned into stone, also preserving organic remains. Multi-story buildings, frescoes, papyri and skeletal remains are just some of the excavated materials that have helped archaeologists and historians reconstruct the daily life of a 1st-century AD Roman city. Herculaneum is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
A curiosity: did you know that Herculaneum owes its name to the hero Hercules, who – according to legend – founded the city in 1243 BC?
