The Campi Flegrei area, which starts from Naples but develops mainly on the territories of Bacoli, Monte di Procida, Pozzuoli and Quarto, is an area that is located above one of the most famous volcanic territories on Earth, thanks to the Solfatara Volcano, whose crater offers a unique spectacle of columns of smoke and boiling mud, with a strong smell of sulfur.
It is an area that combines incredible panoramas, millenary myths and legends and where the gaze can cross dozens of architectural and natural beauties.
What will we visit?
First of all, the Flavian Amphitheater of Pozzuoli is an exceptional example of Roman architecture and is the third largest ever built by the Romans after the Colosseum and the Capua Amphitheater.
Built-in 1 AD, it is a splendid example of the prestigious engineering developments achieved in ancient Rome. It was mainly used for
gladiator fights and had a capacity of up to 40,000 spectators.
It is located in the center of Pozzuoli.
Then we will reach the Aragonese castle of Baia, which is located almost at the western end of the gulf, just before Capo Miseno and is a stone’s throw from Cuma, the first permanent Greek colony on the Italian mainland.
Perched on a steep cliff, the Castello di Baia, as it is known, was believed to be the summer residence of Julius Caesar. Archaeologists, however, speculate that the villa actually belonged to the emperor Nero. Whatever the truth, at the end of the 15th century the Aragonese built a castle over the ancient Roman ruins and the fortress became an observation point designed to keep pirates off the coast.
After the Castle, we will go to the Terme di Baia, a thermal complex characterized by sulfur springs and the presence of splendid ruins of the original thermal baths dating back to the era of ancient Rome.
On the other hand, it is no coincidence that this locality was the favorite holiday resort of the emperors and prominent figures of the Roman Empire, such as Seneca, Cicero, Nero and many others.
The tour will end with a fantastic panoramic route to enjoy the wonders of nature in the Phlegraean Fields.
